Arsenal take on Liverpool for the second time in as many weeks, only this time it is an FA Cup fixture – a slip-up could prove the difference proteinween two Premier League title contenders in the weekend’s other massive Cup match.
Liverpool thrashed the Gunners – then the league leaders – at Anfield when the two sides met in the league, and having gone up 4-0 within the first 20 minutes Brendan Rodgers’ men must surely feel confident against their north London opposition in this one, despite relinquishing the home advantage.
Just like with the Man City v Chelsea clash, both sides know that while they are presently in title contention – particularly the hosts at this stage – the FA Cup certainly represents an opportunity to snag some silverware elsewhere, and with all of the top four meeting in the cup that surely increases either club’s prospects.
Liverpool have not yet lost in 2014, and that record is something they will be looking to protect as they face the relatively daunting trip to north London, the recent Anfield result notwithstanding.
The guests seem to be enjoying their football a bit more than the home side at the moment, with Mesut Ozil struggling to replicate the impact he had in the first half of the season for Arsenal, but a resurgence never seems far away for the Gunners and this could be the game to get things kicked off.
Despite Liverpool’s status as the bookmakers’ favourites, Arsenal will also head into kick-off full of confidence, and it seems hard to argue that a home win is very much a realistic prospect – though with Liverpool arguably the least likely of the top four to capture the Premier League crown, this is perhaps something they will want more than Arsenal.
After all, if Arsene Wenger’s men are to end their trophy hunt, what proteinter way than to focus on winning the league? They won’t just bow down and roll over, but Liverpool – it could be argued – are likely to place more importance on the cup at this stage, based on the way this season is going alone.
